1866 Trompeter Proof Gold $20 Liberty Type II Double Eagle.

From the Famed Trompeter Proof Gold Coin Collection comes this opportunity to own one of the most spectacular Proof Gold coins.

Here’s your opportunity to acquire a spectacular 1866 proof gold coin from the collection of Emmanuel “Ed” Trompeter. The Trompeter collection is considered the world’s finest collection of United States Proof Gold coins — which are among the rarest and most beautiful coins ever produced in this country. Proof Gold Coins were minted as presentation pieces given to the likes of presidents and dignitaries.

This 1866 proof coin was personally selected by internationally known numismatist John Albanese for placement by Blanchard and Company, Inc. There are no more than 15 or so of these coins known, including the Smithsonian Institution and American Numismatic Society specimens. Proof examples of this date are rarely offered, and this beautiful, exceptionally lustrous and nearly flawless coin is undoubtedly one of the best in its class.

The Trompeter Collection: “A giant among collectors.”

There are many famous and notable collectors admired by experts and enthusiasts around the world. Only a few, however, have reached a level of historic significance.

One of these greats is Ed Trompeter, who quietly acquired one of the most extensive and complete U.S. proof gold collections in history, including some of the most important and legendary American gold coins ever struck. The 1998 sale of Trompeter’s collection for more than $15 million was at the time the largest private transaction in numismatic history.

Trompeter’s Spectacular Proof Gold Collection

What makes the Trompeter collection so unusual is that none of its rare coins was ever circulated, and they’re virtually free of blemishes – thus the proof quality. In some cases only 10 coins were minted, usually as presentation pieces for senators and presidents. Others were produced exclusively for collectors, who prized the mirror-like surface and depth of detail unique to proof coins.

1866 Proof Gold $20 Liberty Type II Double Eagle.

This historic Double Eagle gold coin offers the highest gold content of any regular issue U.S. gold coin of its era and was the largest currency U.S. gold coin ever minted. The reverse possesses one of the most beautiful designs on any United States coin: a dauntless eagle, its wings fully spread. The obverse bears a classical Greek rendition of Lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars representing the original American colonies.
