A popular coin for collectors, not only distinct for its novel denomination but also for the series having four varieties:

  1. No Stars Obverse
  2. Stars Obverse
  3. Arrows at date
  4. Legend on Obverse

The coin was discontinued due to the growing popularity of the copper/nickel five-cent piece. The Seated Liberty Series followed the Mint’s tradition of having the same design on all coins of the same metal.

The series contains one of the great rarities of American numismatics – the 1870-S Half Dime of which there is only one known to exist.
