This new design of 1829 was the first to have the denomination placed on the coin, expressed as “5 C.” The coin soon became known as a half dime or five-cent coin instead of the previously used “half disme”. This was also the first time the eagle on the reverse was adorned with a shield. This series attracts a large following of set builders due to the relatively small number of coins needed to complete the set. There are also no extremely rare dates, so a set can be acquired without spending a king’s ransom.
